The Film Festival Staffing, Workforce, & Compensation Survey, supported by Elevent and conducted by Sherwood B. Smith of Avenue ISR, looks at current salaries and wages across a range of roles within the festival landscape, current policies on organization culture, and offers insight into suggested best practices from festivals for hiring, retention, and workplace morale.
The three objectives for the survey are:
- Learn from film festival leaders about their current approaches to using and compensating team members across a range of functions and roles.
- Determine current policies toward work from home, pandemic response, diversity/equity/inclusion and other current issues.
- Provide opportunities for film festival leaders to share best practices in hiring, retention and workplace morale.
Dear Producer and Film Festival Alliance partnered on this first-of-its-kind survey to assess how film festivals contributed to filmmaker sustainability in 2020, particularly in regard to financial compensation. The goal of this survey was to establish a baseline during a pivotal year for our industry and collect data that will allow festivals to quantify their financial impact on filmmakers, compare to other organizations, and identify national trends and patterns in the industry.
About the Survey
We deployed the survey in May 2021 and reached out to festivals of all sizes and genres. We had more than 200 respondents begin the survey, with 38 percent of respondents (75 total) completing most applicable questions. We collected information about what festivals looked like in 2020 (length, location, types of screening, etc.), demographics of paid staff and number of volunteers, and perhaps most importantly, financial information related to operating budgets, revenue, and filmmaker support.
2021 FFA Rolling Festival Audience Survey
Film Festival Alliance is pleased to announce the return of the FFA Audience Survey. This is a great opportunity for festivals to better understand and compare your audiences against national benchmarks, secure more sponsors and build support in our communities. We are continuing our work with Avenue ISR for the survey. You can review the 2020 Audience Survey here.
This year, we’re changing it up! The survey will be issued on a rolling basis until December 10th, 2021. You tell us when you’d like to send it out, and we’ll get you a custom survey link.

Festival Impact on Filmmaker Sustainability Survey 2021
Why This Survey?
In January 2021, Dear Producer released a Producers Sustainability Survey Report, revealing that 56% of producers earned $25K or less in 2020, with more than a quarter of producers earning less than $2,500. This report sparked conversations within the filmmaking community about how film organizations can do more to financially support filmmakers.
In the festival world, there are no set standards for filmmaker compensation best practices; this survey will provide an opportunity to understand the financial relationship between festivals and filmmakers, with a focus on 2020 — the year festivals transformed. The aim of this survey is to assess the impact festivals have on filmmaker sustainability, particularly in regard to financial compensation. We are asking about revenue sharing, screening fees, panel stipends, cash awards and travel and lodging paid out to filmmakers.
Why Complete it?
This data will establish a baseline during a pivotal year for our industry. It will also allow festivals to quantify their financial impact on filmmakers, compare to other organizations, and identify national trends and patterns in the industry.
